The Nursing School at ASM has been approved as a private nursing school with the South African Nursing Council since November 1991 and has provisional Department of Education accreditation. Currently it offers a fifteen month Enrolled Auxiliary Nurse’s Programme. Professional (registered) nurses in South Africa normally follow a four-year training programme before qualifying. The fifteen month auxiliary nurse’s training is the equivalent of the first year in this process and is a more accessible way for mature or rural people far from universities to enter the nursing profession. It is also a valuable opportunity for people preparing for the mission field to do both nursing and missions training at the same institution.

In keeping with the vision, ethos and values of ASM, applicants cannot choose to only do the nursing course. They are all required to do at least one year of the Missions and Ministry Development Programme. This ensures that candidates get a good grounding in the Bible, have appropriate Missions and Ministry exposure and many opportunities for personal growth and development. ASM believes that this prepares them to be more caring and effective nurses.

In the nursing course candidates learn all the basic nursing skills, basic nutrition, anatomy and first aid, some general issues relating to promoting health and preventing illness in a community, and special issues relating to the care and well being of young children aged 0 to 5 years old.

The course intake is in January each year and then normally runs through to the end of the following March (i.e. fifteen months). The students do a SA Nursing Council examination on the last Friday in the following March. For students who have a Grade 12 pass that allows them entrance into degree courses, or who have previously done tertiary studies and who have no immediate family responsibilities, the Nursing School offers a “fast track” option of the Auxiliary Nurse’s Programme. In essence the course starts mid-January and ends with the SA Nursing Council Examination on the last Friday in November of the same year. However, this option allows very little time off during the programme for holidays or sick leave. Should any fast track student not manage to complete the academic or clinical requirements of the course by the end of November then that student will automatically be enrolled for the SA Nursing Council Examination the following March.
