The Nursing School at ASM has been approved as a private nursing school with the South African Nursing Council and has provisional registration with the Department of Higher Education and Training (Reg No. 2009/FE08/006) to offer the National Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing. Professional (registered) nurses in South Africa normally follow a four-year training programme before qualifying. The auxiliary nurse’s training is the equivalent of the first year in this process and is a more accessible way for mature or rural people far from universities to enter the nursing profession. It is also a valuable opportunity for people preparing for the mission field to do both nursing and missions training at the same institution.
In keeping with the vision, ethos and values of ASM, applicants cannot choose to only do the nursing course. They are all required to do at least one year of the Missions and Ministry Development Programme. This ensures that candidates get a good grounding in the Bible, have appropriate Missions and Ministry exposure and many opportunities for personal growth and development.
ASM believes that this prepares them to be more caring and effective nurses.
In the nursing course candidates learn all the basic nursing skills, basic nutrition, anatomy and first aid, some general issues relating to promoting health and preventing illness in a community, and
special issues relating to the care and well being of young children aged 0 to 5 years old.
The course intake is in January each year and then normally runs through to the end of November. Students do a SA Nursing Council examination on the last Friday in November. The course allows very little time off during the programme for holidays or sick leave. Should a student not manage to complete the academic or clinical requirements of the course by the end of November then that student will automatically be enrolled for the SA Nursing Council Examination the following March.
- Module One: Nursing history and ethics
- Module Two: Basic nursing care
- Module Three: Elementary anatomy and physiology
- Module Four: Elementary nutrition
- Module Five: First aid
- Module Six:Introduction to Community Health Issues
The South African Nursing Council states that during the training period each student needs to do more than 1000 hours of relevant clinical work, in clinics or hospitals that have been inspected and
approved by them. Clinical work is done in the local government hospital and clinics and in the ASM mobile clinic. All clinical work is done without remuneration (i.e. the student is not paid).
